Charles Fisher

Director at Large

I am honored to serve as a director on the STC Board. I’m a living product of how valuable the STC offerings can be to a person’s career. I want to make sure we continue to identify and meet the needs of current members, as well as identify ways to connect with new members and grow both the profession and the Society.

Charles Fisher is an STC Fellow with more than 25 years of experience as a technical communicator, primarily in the IT/software industry. Throughout his career, he has worked as a writer, manager, and educator. He has developed online help, technical reference, and installation/administration procedures for enterprise application systems. He has also designed and implemented integrated help systems for software products. As a manager, he has coached and mentored other technical writers while developing his own leadership and project management skills.

Charles held several leadership positions with the STC Washington DC–Baltimore Chapter, including program manager, competition manager, and president. Charles has been a frequent speaker at STC conferences and seminars. He served as stem manager for several annual conferences, and he was the technical program manager for the 49th Annual Conference. He has taught courses in technical and business communication for the University of Maryland University College, the University of Phoenix Online, George Mason University, and Virginia Tech.

Charles served as a judge for the chapter’s annual publications and art competition. He also served as a judge for the international level of the annual publications competition for many years, and he managed the annual STC International Student Technical Writing Competition. Charles was a member of the STC Certification Task Force. When the STC launched the Certified Professional Technical Communicator certification, Charles served as a board member and treasurer for the STC Certification Commission.

After many years of living and working in the Washington, DC, area, Charles and his family moved to Roanoke, VA, to be closer to relatives. Today, Charles works as the program manager for Meridium, Inc., where he manages the efforts of a global documentation team.

Charles earned a BA in English from Virginia Tech, a MA in professional writing and editing from George Mason University, and an MS in technology management from George Mason University. He also holds current Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Scrum Master (CSM) certifications.
