Long-time Editor of Technical Communication Retires, Search Underway for Replacement
After 12 years and 48 issues as editor of Technical Communication, George Hayhoe has announced his retirement, saying "it's time for me to turn the editor's chair over to my successor." The journal is the quarterly, peer-reviewed publication of the Society for Technical Communication, published since the 1950s.
During Hayhoe’s time as editor he improved the editorial review process by requiring electronic submissions, extending peer review to all feature articles, and developing the online presence of the journal. “I consider it the best job in my career,” reminisced Hayhoe. He will continue in his “day job” as professor of technical communication at Mercer University, Macon, GA.
“George has the respect and well wishes of all of us in STC. More than anyone else, he has provided the leadership and imagination that have made the journal a highly respected publication in the global community,” said Linda Oestreich, STC president, in announcing his retirement to the Board. “He has set the bar on the quality of content at a very high level that will be his legacy.”
A search committee has been named to identify the next editor. Letters of intent and CVs are expected by April 21.
Letter of application should address:
The applicant’s knowledge of and experience with STC and the Technical Communication profession;
Editorial experience (working with publishers, journals, special issues, edited collections);
Managerial/administrative experience;
References to published writing;
An example of writing that you are proud of, preferably in an academic context;
The applicant’s vision for the future of Technical Communication;
The applicant’s ideas for how you would find appropriate content for the journal.
