Jane Wilson

Jane Wilson is a knowledgeable technical communicator with over fourteen years of experience, specializing in content development and information design. She also has experience teaching composition and literature at the college level.

Jane currently works as an Information Architect at GE Transportation Optimization Solutions, a supplier of operational software to the rail industry. Jane leads the Information Products group, responsible for product documentation and training deliverables for over forty systems across five product lines. The Information Products group has established a strong reputation for delivering high-quality, innovative information deliverables. Jane focuses on promoting efficient processes and producing targeted, easy-to-use documentation that will help users get the maximum value from their software investment.

Jane has been a member of STC since 2002, and she belongs to the Atlanta Chapter, the Content Strategy SIG, the Information Design & Architecture SIG, and the Management SIG. She was awarded the Atlanta Chapter Member of the Year 2010-2011 and the Atlanta Chapter Cornerstone Award 2009-2010.

She has been a leader in the Atlanta Chapter of STC for many years, currently serving as the Programs Manager. Jane served as the treasurer of the Atlanta STC from 2007 - 2012, and she has demonstrated expertise at budgeting and funding work at a community level. In addition, Jane participated in the 2010 STC Community Funding and Support Task Force and on the Society Budget Review Committee for 2011. Through these experiences, Jane learned much about how the communities and the Society are financially inter-related. She has seen, first hand, many of the financial changes that have impacted the Society in the past few years, and how they have, in turn, affected the communities. She is excited about helping the Society continue to strengthen its finances while providing maximum benefit to members.

In addition to the duties of Treasurer, Jane has represented the Atlanta chapter on Society-level work and at Summit Leadership Day. This year, Jane is leading the host chapter committee for STC Summit 2013. She continues to help recruit new members and volunteers for STC, and she believes facilitating member involvement is one of the most important roles she can play in building the Society.

Jane earned a B.S. in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech, an M.A. in English from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Georgia.

Candidate Statement:

I am committed to promoting technical communication as a profession, and I believe a robust, vibrant STC is critical to accomplishing that goal. The Society has been through many changes in the past few years, and it has been an especially complicated time for finance and funding. I believe we are at a crucial point in our organizational history and must continue our tradition of strong and stable leadership in these areas. I would be honored to be a part of that effort as we work toward shaping the future of the new STC. As an experienced chapter treasurer and member of the Society Community Funding task force, I recognize the issues we have faced with funding and finance, and I have ideas about ways we can continue to strengthen the Society’s business model while benefiting our membership.

Personally, I have gained a lot from STC. Particularly when I was working as a lone writer, I turned to STC for educational opportunities, support from other members, and information about the profession. I have forged strong bonds in my own chapter, and, as I have gotten more exposure to STC at the Society level, I have been repeatedly impressed with the passion and dedication shown by those who volunteer. I strongly believe that I have a responsibility to give back to the group and the profession, and I would appreciate the opportunity to serve as your Treasurer.
