Most associations are having similar issues at the moment, and it is partly due to the economy and partly due to technological advances in the way we communicate and gather information about our profession. As an organization, we need to create value that goes beyond what's available for free in social media and so on. Part of that means doing a better job of promoting the opportunities that membership gives us (networking, professional development, opportunities to learn new skills, mentoring, and so on). Part of it means finding ways to connect with the new technical communicators in our midst and finding ways to connect them to the organization--this means listening to the upcoming generation and providing meaningful services to them.
As to specifics, until I'm elected, I really can't say what plans will work because I need to better understand what the Board is already doing and what's already happening behind the scenes before I commit to a course of action. My first job on the Board will be to listen, and then to work with the Board, members, and the office to act on goals that support the health and growth of the organization.
