STC Mailing List FAQs

Reply and Reply to All both send to the email list only. How do I configure my setup so that Reply sends to the author and Reply to All sends to author and the list?

From the List Admin Menu, select List Info. Scroll to the Email Headers section and locate the Reply To field. Change the value to author.

How do I require new members to confirm their registration before adding them to the list?

From the List Admin Menu, select List Info. Scroll to the Confirmations section and locate the Confirm Subscribes? field. From the drop-down menu, select Yes, require confirmation.

How do I disallow attachments and HTML posts? Attachments are clogging the list, and HTML posts are trashing the digest format.

From the List Admin Menu, select Action Phrases, then Create Phrase. In the Phrase field, enter the appropriate action phrase. (An action phrase is code that defines the condition in which an action is automatically launched.) From the drop-down menu in the Response field, select either No Attachments or No HTML, and click Save at the bottom of the screen.

You can find sample action phrases to reject attachments or HTML posts at: www.lyris.com/products/listmanager/user_area/tools (scroll to the bottom), or you can create one of your own.

Here's an example of an action phrase used to filter attachments:

FILTER ATTACHMENTS
Content-Disposition: attachment;
Content-Type: application
Content-Type: text/x-vcard;
Content-Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature
Content-type: multipart/mixed;
X-MS-Attachment:
begin 6

How do I create or edit a header or footer? Currently, subscription information resides in the footer, and I'd like to place it in the header.

From the List Admin Menu, select List Info. Scroll to the Headers and Footers section and complete the appropriate Header or Footer field.

How do I create a welcome letter to new list participants?

From the List Admin Menu, select Documents. Select Create Document, and complete the fields with the information requested. From the drop-down menu in the Type field, select Hello: Welcome message user receives when joining a group. Click Save at the bottom of the screen. At the next screen, select Go to List Admin Menu. From the List Admin Menu, scroll to the Documents section and select the name of your new document from the drop-down menu.

How can I configure the list to allow me to approve the first few messages by a new member?

From the List Admin Menu, select List Info. Scroll to the Posting Privileges and Moderation section. From the drop-down menu in the Moderated field, select number moderated - members must have their first few messages approved. From the drop-down menu in the Approved# field, select the appropriate number of messages to be approved.

How can I reduce the amount of spam on the list?

If your list is not intended to be public, you should restrict posting to members only. From the List Admin Menu, select List Info. Scroll to the Posting Privileges and Moderation section. From the drop-down menu in the Non-members can post field, select No, only members are allowed to contribute to the list.

If your list is intended to be public, you may expect to get some spam. Unfortunately, any email address on the Web can be harvested and used for commercial purposes.
