In the first part of this quarterly membership meeting, SIG leaders will present news items related to the Technical Editing SIG. Then TE SIG member Virginia Janzig will present “Editing for Information Accessibility (“Mind the Gap): 2011.”

Accessibility is becoming an increasingly important topic for editors, especially with the 1998 amendment to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and increased emphasis from the European Union and the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative. In this presentation, Virginia Janzig covers how editors can assist writers to improve users’ access to technical documentation. This presentation will explore the following issues involving user accessibility: Issues and trends driving accessibility, including users with physical disabilities and those for whom English is a second language. Basic editing strategies for addressing and improving accessibility of information. Where to go to find information about accessibility.
