Searching for embedded URLs in Word or PDF files
Discussion started by Donna Adams , on 05 July 12:31 PM

Good day!

At the moment, we are still publishing our materials in PDF, and loading them to our company intranet site for easy access.

We have been embedding links in our Word files (the working copies, which are then converted to PDF). However, we are now facing a challenge. As other website are updated, the URLs in our files are becoming out of date. We need to be able to search on the embedded URLs (inserted as a hyperlink in Word, so that only the linking text appears).

We have not found a way to search on the URLs hidden in these hyperlinks, either in Word or PDF, so maintenance of broken links is extremely difficult and time consuming.

Does anyone know a way to search on these URLs?

I will really appreciate any assistance!

Thank you.

Daryl and Mark,

Thank you both for your assistance. The redirect table is a great idea, and one that we will look into for the future. The yahoo answer should help to reduce the pain of the transition.

Donna, we use a web redirect table for this purpose. All of the hyperlinks in the source document (Word) send an index number to the redirect table. The redirect table then points that index to the correct web page. With this approach, you never need to go back and edit the hyperlinks in the Word docs, you just need to change the target URL in the redirect table. Here is an excerpt from our redirect table:

Source = http://redirect.makemusic.com/?id=1
Target = http://www.smartmusic.com/Support/QuickStart.aspx
