A group to gather ideas for the 60th Anniversary celebration at the STC Summit in Atlanta, GA.

I've been approved as the task force chair, and the following STC members have been approved as task force members:

Bill Leavitt, former STC president and STC Fellow, Chicago

Michael Opsteegh, Senior Member, Orange County

Roger Renteria, Member, New Mexico Kachina chapter


We'll be looking for ideas to help celebrate STC's 60th Anniversary in Atlanta. I'm working closely with Dr. Jane Wilson in the Atlanta chapter to make this an event to remember.


I like Michael's idea for the wine tasting. Folks can download my free ebook, Mixers: Friends and Wineries and have a lot of fun! The book comes with a free tag, too! I can customize the tag for the 60th Anniversary celebration, too! Folks can wear their lanyards with a custom design for the wine tasting. As chapter secretary, I'm trying to keep as much of the Kachina Chapter digital documents. Right now it's saved in three locations, password protected online, my computer, and external HDD. There is hardly much, except what exists on the website...but it is worth a start. I agree with Michael that moving over to Google Apps is the best option available, unless you consider them Skynet. I considered using Google Apps for my chapter, except I want to make a case for Chapters and Communities to use alternatives to Google (which is strange coming from someone who evangelizes Google to friends). I'm unsure if the STC Office keeps a list dating back to the start of each community and who the officers were each year. Would you know, Rachel?

David, I'll pass that along. While it may not be an opening keynote (that's a totally different committee), it would be interesting to have a panel discussion sometime during the conference. Or even bring back the "closing keynote" and have it right before the closing luncheon.

I just posted a question that this group should probably help with. Kevin in the office has a list of STC Summits/Annual Conferences from 2000 until 2013. I want to build a list from the first conference we held until today.... I have a few of the years before 2000, but want to get them all. For instance, 1984 was Seattle, 1990 was Santa Clara, 1995 was Washington, DC, 1996 was Seattle again...please help fill in the holes!

For the 50th celebration our chapter petitioned the State of Wisconsin and City of Milwaukee to declare a week as Technical Communication week. We provided the content of the decrees and they were granted. During that week we:
- held a celebration meeting
- communicated the decree to chapter members and their employers
- visited TC classrooms and shared our story with students at our local universities
- sent press releases to the local papers about the decree and our profession

This is easily done and I can provide the text of our request. It would be great to see how many states grant the decree.
Having the week of the Summit declared National Technical Communication Week by the President would be very cool.

We could create a MySTC site where everyone can post photographs and memories about the past and present, and important events in the STC's history.

I worked at a company that created a website to celebrate its 30th anniversary in business. We could see the milestones accomplished, read the postings from other employees in other countries, and learn about our coworkers near and far.

As discussed at the Chicago Summit, I will be happy to help with planning. As a Community Outreach member, I look forward to helping generate energy at the community level and believe this celebration will be a great focus for the coming year.
