India Chapter

Mumbai/Bangalore, India

“I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep”

The statement of Robert Frost has been true to many a generation's trust, and it holds a significant value for the India Chapter of Society for Technical Communication. An admonition, a belief, a dream and a vision: it all congregated toward the making of STC India. From the 1990s to this present date, STC India has been offering knowledge and improving professional lives in the field of technical communication.

The 1990s saw a tremendous rise in the number of technical communication professionals in India. With no formal education in the field of technical communication, the need for a forum to exchange ideas as well as share experience and knowledge was badly felt.

The Technical Writers of India (TWIN) mailing list, started by Gurudutt Kamath, served as a great platform for the writing community. This list and meetings of technical communicators in various cities brought together the few STC members in India. By 1998, active discussions began on the need for establishing an Indian STC Chapter. Soon, Gurudutt Kamath circulated an STC application form that was signed by 15 members and submitted for approval by STC. The first Administrative Council took charge with Gurudutt Kamath as the Chapter President in 1999.

Since then, the India chapter has increased its strength to 100+ registered members and several sustaining member organizations. STC India Chapter plays a key role in educating technical communication professionals in the country through learning sessions that impart information about the skills required to shape their careers.

One of the hallmarks of STC India has been organizing the fanfare STC India Annual Conferences. It is one of the most successful technical communication events that happens once a year where knowledge in every form is transformed into assets. From the Garden City of India to the beaches of Goa, to the Nawabs’ palace in Hyderabad to the beautiful locales of Pune, STC India has traveled yielding dreams and making futures of technical communication professionals.

One thing for sure, STC India has loads of challenges before it but with the support of YOU, it will overcome and come as victorious. These challenges- be it financial or activities front are not something that can stop us from delivering knowledge. We have done it in the past and we will continue to do with it.
