Grammar isn't a set of arbitrary rules and boring definitions. It's a way to ensure that your message comes through clearly, without distracting deviations from conventional expression. Grammar is also a gatekeeper. If you know how to express yourself in Standard English, you have a better chance at jobs with more responsibility and higher pay. In TechComm Grammar, I show you how to recognize and avoid common errors in real-world writing.
The class is interactive. During each session, I explain a topic and provide practice exercises to be completed in class and at home. You learn not only what’s correct but also why it’s correct, so you can apply the principle to all your writing and explain it to colleagues. Note: Students should submit short writing samples before the first class, so that I can tailor instruction to their needs. Don’t stress out! The class is a no-judgment zone.
During this course, attendees will learn how
- to master the conventions of Standard English
- to grasp the logic underlying grammar rules
- to explore apps, websites, other reference sources that help you resolve grammar questions as they arise
- best practices for TechComm writing
- increased confidence in written expression
- ability to suit the purpose, medium, and audience
