Hiring a Writer for Topic-Based Authoring: A Test of Skills and Potential
Thursday, 24 September 2020 – 12 Noon EDT (GMT-4)
Topic-based authoring and content re-use can be a hard concept for some people to wrap their heads around. Some writers take to it immediately while others will never understand it. But how do you tell the difference between someone who has the potential to be a great contributor and someone who will need more mentoring than you are ready to provide? A writing test is just another tool for selecting the right candidates. Interaction with the team, other management, and the candidate’s demeanor is as much an indication of “fit” as their ability to think and write in “topics.” Using a simple puzzle box and their topic-based authoring tool, Ray Davis’ department devised a writing test that allows them to evaluate a writer’s potential using the basics of topic-based authoring. See the test, how they administer and evaluate it, and how it has improved the quality of their team and their writing.
Takeaways include the following:
- Topic-based authoring requires a more abstract approach to writing than the traditional style of writing.
- Topic-based authoring is tool agnostic. Good candidates understand the concept even if they are not well versed with a specific tool.
