A "First" Look: First to Renew and First to Join

The renewal and registration process opened up for STC two weeks ago, on Thursday, 15 October 2009, and for some members that couldn’t come too soon. Your Friendly Neighborhood Blogger decided to find the first person to become a new member and the first person to renew. Thanks to the iMIS expertise of Selena in the home office I found them, and asked each of these brave pioneers a few questions.

The first new STC member for 2010 is David Cochrane, who is starting a technical writing company in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area. The first to renew was Dan Block, a longtime member from western New York State. Let's see what they had to say!

David Cochrane

How did you first hear about STC?
I first heard about the STC when I was a student studying Technical Communication at Seneca College in Toronto.

What prompted you to join STC?
I joined the STC because I believe the STC does an excellent job of promoting the Technical Writing field and providing timely information to writers.

Was there a specific thinking of “I want to sign up right away for 2010”?
Yes, I am returning to the technical writing field after a short absence.

What’s your history as a technical communicator and your current position?
I have worked in the technical writing field for over 3 years. At present I am starting a technical writing company in the greater Toronto area.

What STC benefits are you most excited about?
I always enjoy looking at the yearly surveys. The Job Bank is also very helpful.

How do you see membership in STC helping you in your career?
Access to the Job Bank will probably work out being the most helpful.

Dan Block

How long have you been a member of STC?
I don’t remember exactly. At least fifteen years I believe. [ed note: Dan first joined STC in May 1990.]

What prompted you to first join STC?
I was in technical writing then and wanted to ensure I was up-to-date on my trade.

What went into your decision to renew?
For a number of reasons; 1) I feel it is important for people to keep current, 2) I like the STC job search capabilities, both when looking for a job and possibly posting a position if looking for help, and 3) I think it is important to belong to a professional organization for the resources they offer.

What’s your history as a technical communicator and your current position?
Most of my career has been in the technical publications field, from technical writer to manager of tech pubs and training. I am currently a proposal manager, responsible for managing and creating bids in the passenger railcar overhaul industry.

What STC benefits have you taken advantage of the most?
Primarily using the job postings resource. STC was the source for me finding my previous job.

How has membership in STC helped you in your career?
The company I work for emphasizes the importance of being degreed and/or certified and always keeping up to date, if not improving, your knowledge base.
