Save the Dates, and other Recognition News

Guest post by Nicky Bleiel.

The committee chairs are hard at work on updating the guidelines for all of the STC Recognition programs—but in the meantime, I thought I would fill you in on the 2010-2011 deadline dates and other news.

First of all, here are the application deadlines. Keep in mind that the updated guidelines have not yet been posted for these recognitions, but you can use the guidelines on the website to begin your planning. Please see the Recognitions menu on www.stc.org for information about all of these recognition levels.

Associate Fellow and Fellow: Application due 4 October 2010

Distinguished Service Awards (DCSA/DSSA/DSAS), Jay Gould Award, Ken Rainey Award, Sigma Tau Chi/Alpha Sigma: Application due 1 November 2010

Community Achievement Award: Application due 24 January 2011*

*CAA is shifting to a calendar year, so the 2010-2011 awards will cover the time period of March 1 to December 31, 2010.

In other news, there have been changes to two recognitions programs, plus the addition of two awards. These changes make it possible for communities to recognize more of their outstanding members with Distinguished Service awards and expand the Community Achievement awards.

Changes to the Community Achievement awards:

  • All communities who the judges determine meet the criteria for Community of Distinction will be awarded this honor. It will not be limited to a single community per category.
  • There will be two new awards. “Community of the Year” will recognize one community as the outstanding community of the year. This community will be chosen from those awarded Community of Distinction. “Most Improved Community” will be awarded to the community determined to have made the biggest strides from one year to the next, based on their CAA applications.

Changes to the Distinguished Service Awards:

  • For the Distinguished Chapter Service Award, Distinguished SIG Service Award, and Distinguished Service Award for Students, there is a new system for determining how many members may be nominated per community. It will be based on your Communities’ Category as of 30 June 30 2010. Community Leaders will receive an email in early July with their category information. The number of available  nominations per category is in the chart below.
  • Another big change — in the past, the entire community administrative council was not eligible for this award. Now, only two community officers will be ineligible for the award, President and Vice President.

I think that is it! Mark your calendars and start thinking about who your community will nominate for Associate Fellow and Distinguished Service … and what Community Achievement level your Community will aim for. Those in the academic community should think about teachers you would like to nominate for the Ken Rainey and Jay Gould awards—and encourage students to apply for Sigma Tau Chi and Alpha Sigma.

Have a great summer and thank you!
