STC Communities, Staff Win APEX Awards

Two communities and members of the STC staff recently were named winners in APEX 2011, The Twenty-Third Annual Awards for Publication Excellence. APEX Awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the ability to achieve overall communication excellence. APEX Grand Awards honor the outstanding works in each main category, while APEX Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional entries in each of the individual categories. Of more than 3,300 total entries, just 100 won APEX Grand Awards. Congratulations to the following STC winners:

  • Carolina Chapter, APEX Award of Excellence in the category of Newsletters – Electronic & Web
  • Technical Editing SIG, APEX Award of Excellence in the category of One to Two Person–Produced Web & Intranet Sites
  • Elizabeth Pohland, editor, Intercom, APEX Award of Excellence in the category of Magazines & Journals – Electronic & Web
  • Chip Boyd, webmaster, www.stc.org, APEX Grand Award in the category of Web & Intranet Sites, Nonprofit Small Office

The APEX Grand judges said of STC.org: “The new and improved site is indeed new and improved, starting with a much cleaner and more effective home page—with good attention to eye flow and navigation. The rotating banner heads (almost billboard-style ads) really grab your attention, and focus it on the big headlines. The drop down menu bar is fast and well-organized, and gives visitors quick access to the site's superb, in-depth content. If you're a technical communicator and you can't find it here, we're not sure where you'd look.”

Congratulations to both communities and to both staffers, especially Chip for the APEX Grand Award!

  1. Congrats to all the winners for this impressive accomplishment. I want to give a special shout-out to the STC Carolina newsletter team: Meredith Kinder, outgoing managing editor; Sheila Loring, incoming managing editor; Christina Eftekhar, copyeditor; and Tim Kornegay, production editor. They do a fantastic job, especially for such a small volunteer staff!

  2. Thanks to you all for your kind words and a HUGE thanks to all STC Carolina newsletter contributors. Every quarter, Rick Sapir (webmaster extraordinaire), Christina Eftekhar (patient copyeditor), and Tim Kornegay (gifted production editor) work behind-the-scenes to produce a well-written, educational, and visually dynamic online newsletter. I feel fortunate to work with you all.

  3. Congratulations to the Carolina chapter’s newsletter team for winning its second consecutive Apex Award of Excellence. The award serves as recognition of the devotion and passion of its volunteers.
What is equally important is that the Carolina chapter is one of a few chapters that still publish a newsletter. I recently discovered that Carolina Communiqué is available as an eBook–great job!
