Summit ’13: Atlantic Station, Enjoy a Taste of the New South

Guest post by Mirhonda Studevant, STC Atlanta

Conveniently situated near the Georgia Tech campus, Atlantic Station offers something for everyone.  Atlantic Station is a mixed-use development that was formerly a steel mill. After an intentional environmental reclamation effort, the 138-acre space has been transformed into a pedestrian-friendly site that offers a wonderful complement of green space and residential and commercial development.

Residents and tourists of all ages enjoy the many shops, restaurants, exhibits, sports bars, and nightlife situated in this lively space. Because Atlantic Station is easily accessible via shuttle from MARTA’s Art Center station, you can meet up with a walking/running group, stretch in an outdoor yoga session, enjoy delicious selections from a host of restaurants, or even watch a movie on the green space known as Central Park. If you prefer to watch a movie indoors, a Regal Cinema is located onsite and shows movies practically 24 hours a day.

For families, there is a Tot Lot on Tuesdays, as well as a train that circles the area on the weekends. Atlantic Station presents the very best of the New South.  You can enjoy concerts under the stars, or groove to a jamming DJ at Strip, the latest concept restaurant from the owners of the popular Atlanta restaurants Twist and Shout (two separate entities, each with their own flair, by the way).  You can also enjoy live jazz and people-watch at The Lobby at The Twelve, a hotel and residential building in Atlantic Station.

Atlantic Station is also home to several exhibitions. The Titanic exhibition includes hundreds of artifacts from that fated ship. The Bodies exhibition offers a new view and perspective on the human body. You can purchase tickets for either exhibition or a combo ticket for admission to both exhibitions. There is also the fascinating Millennium Gate monument and museum, which offers a fascinating historical perspective. If a Cirque de Soleil performance is in town, most likely their big tent will also be housed at Atlantic Station.

Atlantic Station has a charm all its own.  In addition to anchor stores, such as Target, H&M, and Dillard’s, many specialty shops and boutiques offer everything from handcrafted jewelry to the latest phone accessories. You may find yourself being serenaded by a blues singer or the witness to a flash mob. Whether it’s a patio lunch at Copeland’s Cheesecake Bistro, a custom stir-fry at Tin Drum, or a game at Yard House, your visit to Atlantic Station will be well worth your time. Use this interactive map to get started.

  1. Thank you so much for this wonderful post I plan to arrive Friday and will be going there. I read elsewhere that Atlantic station is also becoming a place of predilection for Hollywood stars…
