Steve Skojec: Leaving STC

I've been with STC nearly three years. During that time, I've forged many relationships, built friendships, and worked through challenges with countless STC members. Now, the time has come for me to say goodbye and move on.

Effective 1 June, I will be leaving STC to join Home Source Realty Group as Vice President of Communications & Marketing. This isn't just any business opportunity, however. Home Source Realty is a brokerage that is owned and operated by my wife Jamie, and it has grown over the past year into something that requires the efforts of more than one person. This move is not only a step in the right direction for me as a communications professional and entrepreneur, but will also give me the chance to spend more time as an integral part of raising our children.

After my departure, my position will be changing. Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to work much more closely with our Membership department, which came under the leadership of Barbra Sanders last August. In an effort to continue to more fully integrate STC Membership and Community Relations, the two departments are being combined under Barbra’s management. Barbra is an accomplished professional with broad knowledge and contacts in the association world and a passion for staying abreast of the latest developments in membership and community models, and she already has existing relationships with many of our members through her current position. I have confidence that our communities are in good hands with Barbra, along with our new Executive Director, Chris Lyons, who has told me in no uncertain terms that finding a healthy, sustainable structure for our communities is a top priority.

I also leave STC knowing that Ben Woelk, the new chair of the Community Affairs Committee, will have much to offer the communities in the coming months and years. Ben has been a successful chapter president, the Outreach Lead for the CAC over the past year, and is now an STC Director. He has his finger on the pulse of the communities, the challenges they face, and the opportunities before them.

It has been an immense pleasure working with all of you on strengthening the relationships between STC and our communities. It is with satisfaction that I look back and see many successes, and so many of you have humbled me with your appreciation over the past two and a half years. It's my turn to thank you for all that you do for STC. Thank you for your volunteer leadership, for your countless hours put into your communities and the larger Society without seeking reward, for your dedication to the profession and this premier professional organization for technical communicators.

It's a new chapter, both for me and for the Society. These are exciting times. I truly appreciate all of your support over the years, and I ask that you be equally patient and supportive as Barbra makes the transition to take on these new responsibilities.

If you have new and future questions or concerns about communities, please contact communities@stc.org.

Thank you all!

  2. Steve, it’s been a genuine pleasure working with you. You really cared about STC’s communities – as evidenced by your taking time to assure us that theyll remain in good hands after you’re gone. Best of everything in your new job!

  3. Pardon me for being a bit picky–that was my job for a long time. Based on the title of your piece, I assumed you were leaving the STC itself, not your position in its administration. There’s a big difference.
