At the Summit: Looking Forward to Columbus

As was announced previously and highlighted in Phoenix, the 2015 Summit will be at the Hyatt Regency Columbus in Columbus, Ohio, from 21-24 June. To get attendees excited about Columbus we had a “quiz show” at the Closing Lunch at the Summit, hosted by Your Friendly Neighborhood Blogger (doing his best Wink Martindale impression). The questions are below; take the quiz and find out how well you know Columbus! Feel free to post your score in the comments section, then make your plans to join us for another great STC conference next year in Ohio.

  1. What large college is in Columbus?
  2. What is the nickname of the Major League Soccer team in Columbus? Crew, Cougars, or Kickers
  3. Which of the following fast-food chains is NOT based in the Columbus area? Wendy's, White Castle, or Sonic

  9. How many bars and restaurants does the nearby Arena District boast? 8, 12, or 16
  10. Which famous golfer was born in Columbus? Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, or Jack Nicklaus

Answers

  1. Ohio State University: The Buckeyes
  2. The Crew. The Crew stadium is just four miles from the hotel, and the stadium where the Columbus Clippers (AAA baseball) play is less than a mile!
  3. Sonic. Both Wendy's and White Castle come from Columbus
  4. 1812. Columbus was actually founded specifically to be the state capital, due to its central location.
  5. The Little Nina. Columbus used to have lighted arches across many of its streets during the early 1900s, and they're starting to add them back. The Buckeye City comes from Ohio State (see question 1)
  6. Trick question! Columbus has a #1 ranking in ALL of them!
  7. The Washington Post called Columbus a Certified Food-Lovers Town. The Hyatt is a short walk from the famous North Market, a 140-year-old public marketplace that includes a flea market on Saturdays.
  8. Jeni's does not make Artisan Artichoke. You can try all the other flavors and many more at the location less than a half-mile from the Hyatt.
  9. There are 16 bars and restaurants, including a dueling piano bar, an Irish pub, gourmet pizza, Italian, Brazilian steakhouse, and more.
  10. Jack Nicklaus. Ohio State University has the official Jack Nicklaus Museum and there are dozens of golf courses nearby. Bring your clubs with you!

  1. I think people will be pleasantly surprised by Columbus! I have had the pleasure of visiting Columbus after being hired by Battelle. Battelle’s headquarters is in Columbus. Columbus is bigger than I thought, more cosmopolitan than I thought, and has numerous restaurants and entertainment areas to try. I hope STC’ers will give Columbus a chance!

  2. My department relocated to the Arena District (near the Columbus Convention Center) a few years ago. There is so much to do here. The restaurants are fabulous (and varied). We’ve got a ball park, an ice rink, parks, a movie theater, shops, all within walking distance. I love it. Last week I stood in line for coffee with an NHL player. This week I heard Jeni’s corporate office is moving in across the street. Life is good.
