A Few of My Favorite Things: Career and Leadership Track

A Few of My Favorite Things: Career and Leadership Track

By Liz Herman (@dr_herman)

I have a view from my office window of the Lincoln and Washington Memorials. But my thoughts are far from those exemplary leaders with historic Presidential careers. Today, I’m California dreamin’ with Anaheim and the 2016 Summit on my mind.

As the track manager for Career and Leadership-focused offerings at this year’s Summit, I had the privilege of reviewing all of the proposals fitting into that category with the excellent assistance of two additional reviewers — Charles Crawley, President Emeritus of the Eastern Iowa chapter and Alisa Bonsignore, Chair of STC’s Education Advisory Panel — and recommending those for acceptance. Not an easy task given the amount of quality proposals that were received.

Allow me to highlight a few of the selected sessions for the Career and Leadership Track. As the track name implies, we think you will find a nice blend between how-to, on-the-job, and expand-your-role presentations.

  • Ben Woelk is returning to discuss introverts in an extrovert’s world. Ben will be presenting An Introvert’s Journey to Leadership. If you are an introvert and have wondered about how to empower yourself and leverage your innate skills to become a leader, Ben’s personal insights and path to leadership will resonate with you.
  • Jack Molisani will be providing practical advice in his How to Write Contracts and Statements of Work Learn how to avoid scope creep and how to set payment terms that favor you if you’re doing independent contracting work. As Jack’s session subtitle implies, learn how to make big bucks and not lose your shirt if (when) something goes wrong.
  • Linda Oestreich wants you to stand out from the crowd as a great leader in a world where many people think of themselves as great leaders. Her On the Primrose Path to Successful Leadership is sure to get you on your way.
  • Michael Opsteegh is providing attendees with A Practitioner’s Guide to Teaching Tech Comm. Join Michael as he explores the variety of academic positions that are available and how you can break into teaching technical communication.
  • Barbara Giammona will be sharing a story about how she created a successful offshore partnership that delivered technical documents on-time and to a level of quality that met organizational needs. In her session, The Offshore Partnership: Turning Challenges into Success, Barbara shares the changes that were made that lead to success.

There’s this and so much more including Progressions focused on career and leadership! You can look at the STC Summit schedule now and make your career and leadership dreams a reality by attending these sessions. See you in Anaheim!
