Meet the Candidates – Jane Wilson

This entry is being posted on behalf of Jane Wilson, candidate for Vice President in the 2017 STC election. More information about Jane can be found on her STC election page.

Hello STC Members –

My name is Jane Wilson, and I am honored and excited to be on the 2017 STC slate as a candidate for Vice President.

Recently, I was asked why I volunteer for the STC. I joined the Society in 2003, when I was working in Atlanta as a lone writer. STC offered a source of expertise, and a community of people with similar experience and questions – and, more importantly, answers to those questions.

I didn’t exactly jump in with both feet. I probably attended a meeting (maybe two!) each year, and I was lucky enough to go to the Summit most years, where I was able to network and learn about latest trends.

Then, during one Summit, the Atlanta chapter president hosted a get-together for the chapter attendees. While I was there, I was recruited to volunteer for the Chapter. I took a leap, and decided to run for Chapter Treasurer. Next, I agreed to serve on a Society-wide task force, where I learned more about how the whole organization worked together, and met more leaders from across the Society. Finally, I took the step of running for a Board position, and was elected STC Treasurer in 2013.

I believe that you get out of any experience what you put into it. As I progressed through these volunteer positions, and got more involved with the Society, the more I have gotten out of it.

While I hope I have contributed to the organization, I know I have gotten back even more than I have given. I have learned about the discipline of technical communication and kept current with the latest trends. I have gained strong leadership experience from working with smart, dedicated STC volunteers and staff members. I have forged strong friendships, and I have gained a deep appreciation for the passion and commitment my colleagues consistently show to the Society.

I am thankful for all the opportunities STC has afforded me so far, and I am looking forward to continuing my work as an STC volunteer for many years to come.

After almost four years on the STC Board as Treasurer, I have learned quite a bit about the Society, and the challenges and opportunities we face. We have made great strides in the past few years stabilizing our finances, improving our education programs, and broadening our membership appeal.

I am confident we are making the strategic decisions we must to ensure a strong, vibrant future for the Society, and I would be deeply proud if I could continue that work as STC’s Vice President and President.

I urge you to review the qualifications and positions of all the candidates and vote in the 2017 STC election. Make your voice heard! The STC has a long history of very close elections, and your vote counts. Voting runs from February 27 (10:00 AM EST/GMT -5) – March 10 (5:00 PM EST/GMT -5).
