Weekly Education Roundup: The Importance of Governance in Regulated Content

It may be summer, but school's just starting for technical communicators! We've got some great webinars and online courses coming up. Make the most of your membership by beefing up your education report card.

This Week:

We've got another FREE STC Member-Only Webinar on the docket for this week: The Importance of Governance in Regulated Content. Presented by Charles Cooper of The Rockley Group, inc., this free webinar will help technical communicators understand the value of governance in creating content for highly-regulated industries. Rather than restricting the content creation process, effective governance in such industries can actually streamline the process. Join Charles today, 26 July, from 2:00-3:00 PM EDT (GMT-4).

Next Week:

In an increasingly international business context, content must be tailored to diverse intercultural audiences. What skills to technical communicators need to succeed in this globalized world? International and Cultural Content Design, a new four-week online course with Kirk St.Amant, is designed to provide technical communicators and content producers  with the foundational knowledge and skills they need to effectively understand and address different international situations and settings. The course begins Tuesday, 1 August and runs through 22 August at 2:00-3:00 PM EDT (GMT-4).

For next week's webinar, we've got Pushing Branches with Forks and Other Feats of Strength with Git, presented by Nicky Bleiel. Git is a popular version control system, both within GitHub and on its own. When documentation source files are stored in Git alongside code, you’ll follow a similar workflow to engineers, which can simultaneously streamline and complicate the development of technical content. In this webinar, Nicly will look at Git and GitHub, talk about how it can be used to your advantage, and have a live demonstration. The webinar is on 2 August from 2:00-3:00 PM EDT (GMT-4).

Upcoming:

One of our most popular online courses is back and better than ever! TechComm Fundamentals Bootcamp (formerly TechComm 101) with Leah Guren has been retooled to make it even more relevant to new technical communicators and those looking for a refresher. TechComm Fundamentals Bootcamp is the fastest, most efficient way to jump-start your career in technical communication. The course begins 8 August and runs through 19 September on Tuesdays from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM EDT (GMT-4).

We're also excited to present a new type of online course: asynchronous courses! Asynchronous online courses are self-paced courses that attendees can register for and complete at any time during a six-week period. All asynchronous materials given by the instructor will be posted and uploaded on Moodle, STC’s free, open, learning platform. These online courses will take place within a six-week period and will not meet for any live sessions.

Our first asynchronous course is Science for All: Introduction to Science Writing with Laura Jacobs! This class is intended for those who are interested in science writing as a career, or for those who are exploring content marketing, public relations or writing for general audiences. The writing strengths that are demanded in this area – maintaining reader interest and providing understanding of very complex subject matter – will carry over into all of our writing efforts and in the professional setting beyond this class. This online course will not meet for regular sessions, but Laura will hold online “office hours” on Thursdays should attendees have questions. This course will run from 17 August through 21 September.
