Technical Communication 2020 – Forget Hindsight, Look Ahead,” presented by Bernard Aschwanden

Saturday, 22 September, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Bernard Aschwanden, a prolific presenter and past president of STC, will visit Northeast Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. to present a full-day seminar, “Technical Communication 2020 – Forget Hindsight, Look Ahead!” at Devore Technologies, a modern computer teaching and web-development facility, located approximately 25 minutes from downtown Cleveland. The three-session seminar promises to unshackle previous methods of technical communication and usher exciting ideas and strategies for meeting the ever-expanding challenges for technical communicators.

Session 1: Building a Business

Whether you want to start and run a business or interact with those who do, there are core things every business owner (small or large) has to do to succeed. That includes getting expert input on your business, knowing when to listen to (or ignore) that input, and building a business based on what you know, learn, and experience. This session discusses ideas, but also explores the direct experience of the presenter.

  • How do you grow a business?
  • What impact will tech comm have on any business?
  • How can we take what we do and know, and create our own business or talk to our co-workers and employers to show our value?

Learn more at this session, including how to make the right decisions (or learn from the wrong ones).

  • Where do you turn for advice?
  • When do you NOT follow the expert opinions?
  • Explore ideas about business models, staffing, client development, and administration.
  • Start/manage a business and effectively address everyday issues.
  • Develop your small (one person shop?) business into something bigger.
  • Use tech comm to grow an existing business.

Session 2: Plan for Tomorrow: Tech Comm and Project Management

Writers are involved in project management. From the smallest piece of content (maybe just a review of a letter) to the most complex content going (documenting an airplane, drug, electric car, government policy, software manual, medical device, or any other information), we manage scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, stakeholder input, and so much more. Isn't it about time we leveraged the best practices of project management to deliver the best documentation we can?

Learn how to leverage the best practices of project management to deliver the best documentation by knowing more about the core components of a project, including scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, stakeholder input, and much more. Identify what these mean for tech comm, and leave with a key list of 10 knowledge areas, and an understanding of how they relate to every single tech comm project we work on. Better documentation through better management of our work. Sounds easy, right? This session will enable you to show immediate value when you return to work.

Session 3: Adobe FrameMaker 2019

A hands-on look at “Adobe FrameMaker 2019,” including tech-savvy “tips and tricks” from Mr. FrameMaker himself, that users will be able to put into daily practice right away!
