STC Summit Track Spotlight: Management, Leadership, and Career Development

STC Summit Track Spotlight: Management, Leadership, and Career Development

By Jane Wilson, Conference Co-Chair

No matter what role you currently have in the technical communications field, the Management, Leadership, and Career Development track is sure to have some offerings that will be useful for you! From project management of agile software projects to people management and team building, this track covers emerging trends and practices for leadership in all types of environments. Some sessions also might offer the spark of an idea you need to move into a new role or discipline.

The past year has offered a lot of challenges, including how we should navigate a changing jobs landscape or work environment. For those of us who might be looking for our next opportunity. Jack Molisani’s “Get That Interview! How to Beat the Dreaded Applicant Tracking System” will offer some much-needed strategies for getting your information in front of the right hiring manager. For those of us looking to climb the leadership ladder, Bobbi Werner will offer some insight in how to make that transition work in her session, “From Contributor to Manager: What Got Me Here Won’t Get Me There.”

Part of being a good manager is managing for growth and creating opportunities for your team. This takes a healthy amount of planning and change management, however. I’m personally looking forward to Jennifer Goode’s presentation on the “Changing of the Guard: Leading Successful Succession” to get some tips on using the skills we have already honed as technical communicators to lead the way on succession planning in an organization.

Finally, we are all learning more every day about the importance of a diverse and inclusive workplace.  In “Show Up, Speak Up, Shut Up: How to Be a Good Ally” Viqui Dill will help us learn to be better allies to our colleagues and help to foster change and create a more welcoming and productive workplace for us all.

These sessions are just a sample of the strong program we have to offer in the Management, Leadership, and Career Development track. I hope you’ll take a look at the full schedule to see what else is going to be offered – I promise you’ll see several options that will help you improve your career and your workplace.

I’m looking forward to seeing you online at the Summit in June!
