A Community Affair: A Special Offer for Community Leaders

A Community Affair is a new series here on STC’s Notebook of postings from the Community Affairs Committee. Today’s post is by Ben Woelk, Outreach Lead for the CAC and Immediate Past President for the Rochester chapter.

Where do I find information about X? Who do I talk to about Y? Who knows how to put together a webinar? Who has ideas for programs? How do I work with my administrative council? How do I grow my community?

Every leader wants to be effective and to build a stronger community. Most of us don't get a lot of training in how to do so. Many of us received very little information from our predecessors. We need a helping hand.

The Outreach Team is that helping hand.

Late last year, the Community Affairs Committee established the Outreach Team to provide support to every STC geographic community and SIG. We're here to help mentor you as leaders, troubleshoot issues, share best practices, help you meet Society requirements, and ensure good communication between you and Society leadership.  Our team members have all been involved in community leadership and understand the challenges you face during an especially turbulent time in our Society's history. We are each passionate about communities.

We're here to make a difference. We don't have all of the answers, but we want to partner with you to build your community and help you grow as a leader.

We want to make a difference for you.

Every community has an Outreach Team member assigned who will provide one-on-one support and be your advocate. If you're not sure who your contact is (or maybe missed his or her attempts to contact you), please send a note to cac@stc.org. If you're interested in helping with our outreach or volunteering for Society initiatives, let us know.

We'll make your connections.

  1. This is great. Thank you!

Even though I have years of experience from volunteering in the Los Angeles chapter, it’s been wonderful having the CAC’s Donn DeBoard as a sounding-board and cheerleader while I revitalize the Santa Barbara chapter.

I highly recommend all communities form a relationship with their CAC representative.
