MadCap Software: Meet Lynn Carrier, Featured MadWorld 2014 Speaker

MadWorld 2014, the premier technical communication and content strategy conference for technical writers, documentation managers, and content strategists, returns to the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego 13-15 April 2014. MadCap’s annual learning conference features informative sessions from industry thought leaders, company representatives, and MadCap Software product evangelists.

Lynn Carrier, senior manager of science marketing content at Illumina, is one of the featured speakers at MadWorld 2014 and answered a few questions about her participation in the conference.

What makes MadWorld different from other industry conferences?
I find MadWorld to be, by far, the most relevant to what my team and I do on a daily basis. There were sessions to help newer writers on my team hone their skills, and there were sessions for advanced writers and strategists that inspired us to do more with the tools we have at our disposal. The location and atmosphere were stellar, too.

Tell us a little bit about your MadWorld 2014 sessions.
I’ll be presenting at two sessions. One is aimed at teams that are new to MadCap Flare—I’ll be sharing best practices for project planning, including why it’s important to determine naming conventions, folder structure, and a reuse strategy up-front. My other session is to demonstrate techniques we’re using to build custom documentation from our Flare project. We’re really proud of what we’ve done in both regards—how we set up our authoring environment and how we’re using it to deliver just what our customers need—and are looking forward to sharing our experiences with other MadCap users.

Excluding your sessions, which MadWorld sessions do you find the most intriguing?
Two sessions that caught my attention right away are Pam Coca’s session “Things You Need to Know That You Don’t Know You Need To Know” and Ellis Pratt’s session “Bust a Move: From Technical Communication to Content Strategy” because they both highlight ways that tech comm folks can elevate their role and bring more value to their organization. That’s important for the organization, but it also helps increase job satisfaction to push yourself to do better and lead a change, rather than react to it. I’m looking forward to what they have to say.
