The March Issue of Intercom is Online

The March issue of Intercom is now online. This issue’s theme is “Career Growth and Career Planning.” Below is a copy of the note from the editor. Take advantage of one of the many benefits of STC membership; read the March issue of Intercom!

March Intercom’s theme is on career growth and career planning and includes multiple articles on the topic. Brian Harris from Red Gate Software in Cambridge, England, describes his work experiences as a technical author and shares a skills map that Red Gate uses to help with future planning and recruitment. In her article, Amanda White compares the skills of technical writers and business analysts and describes the fundamental differences between the roles and how a technical writer can augment skills to switch hats.

Guiseppe Getto has written an article on “Designing for Engagement,” which defines a workflow for participatory, cross-cultural design in user experience. If you’re interested in user experience, this participatory workflow is worth considering. In “Learning to Observe and Teaching Others to See,” Geoff Hart provides an analysis of two design sources that provide useful tips on how to communicate more effectively. In particular, he tackles the challenge of teaching an audience to look for what we want them to see in documentation. And Nita Beck, a MadCap Flare “fan,” has written a thorough review of MadCap’s latest release of Flare 10—and the improvements she details are exciting.

The issue also includes two columns—one by Thomas Barker on teaching career planning and preparing students for their next job. STC President Nicky Bleiel has provided the other column—a primer of the essentials on responsive design—an approach aimed at crafting content to provide an optimal viewing experience across multiple platforms and devices.

As always, I hope readers find much to inspire and stimulate them within these pages. If you’re interested in writing for Intercom to advance your career and build your résumé, please contact me.
