Jill Elhonsali, who is the Community Liason for Sacramento STC and a technical writer for PMC-Sierra in Roseville, CA, gives Summit attendees some advice on how to have a perfect day in Sacramento.
There is no better time to see a city than early on a Sunday morning. My perfect day in Sacramento starts early on a Sunday morning at the Old Soul Co. For coffee lovers this is a pilgrimage. Their coffee is roasted on-site and their velvety lattes are the best I’ve tasted anywhere. The original café is located in a warehouse on an alley off of L Street.
The Crocker Art Museum offers a “Pay What You Wish Sunday” on the third Sunday of every month, which includes 15 May this year for lucky STC Summit attendees. The recent expansion of the museum tripled its size and is a modern contrast to the original building built in 1872. My favorite section of the museum is the Early California gallery that contains Judge E.B. Crocker’s original collection of Gold Rush era paintings in their original room. Paintings such as Charles Christian Nahl’s “Sunday Morning in the Mines” or the “Great Canyon of the Sierra, Yosemite” by Thomas Hill illustrate California 150 years.
After the dose of high culture at the Crocker Art Museum, I head to Old Sacramento and Evangeline’s to browse through their enormous selection of novelty gifts and cards. Evangeline’s is located in the grand Lady Adams building, the oldest surviving building in Old Sacramento. Built in 1852 from the lumber of the dismantled ship named the Lady Adams, even the mast was used as a hitching post. Floods and fires destroyed the rest of the buildings in the area but the Lady Adams building had the last laugh.
The Rio City Café is my favorite place for brunch. The food is great; I especially like their huevos rancheros. If you and your friends can get a table on the patio with a view of the river, life doesn’t get much better than this.
