I’ve just registered for the STC Conference—yes, I know I’m late—and now I’m making plans for where to go for good eats in Sacramento. I’m a vegetarian leaning towards vegan, so I often have to do a little research when I travel. This time, I relied on Yelp, which started with a discussion of how restaurants in Sacramento got points just for being vegetarian. I gather, unlike the Bay Area, there are not a lot of vegetarian/vegan restaurants in Sacramento. While I may not be able to eat at all of them, here’s my top five.
5. Loving Hut (100% vegan)
3500 Stockton
Sacramento CA 95820
(916) 451-6842
www.lovinghut.us
Loving Hut is a chain restaurant with an Asian flare, with specialties from Thailand, China Mongolia, and India. One happy Yelp eater said, “We got the Thai hot and sour soup and some wontons to start with. Both were very tasty. I especially liked the big chunks of pineapple.”
4. Queen Sheba (vegetarian buffets)
1704 Broadway
Sacramento CA 95818
(916) 446-1223
www.queenshebas.com
This Ethiopian restaurant had all kinds of fans. The lunch buffet was definitely the favorite. The reviews from Yelp read like this one: “Oh Queen Sheba, how I worship you so. I’ll even go as far to say that Queen Sheba is my favorite restaurant in Sacramento. I can’t recommend this place enough!” The one downside is that there may be a wait of up to one hour.
3. Le Petite Pedlar (food stands with vegetarian fare)
500 Capitol Mall
Sacramento CA 95818
(916) 337-6425
These are food stands in the Capitol area. Salads are large and fresh and sell for $5. Soups are a favorite too. One Yelp review said, “The best I had last season was the mushroom soup. Really awesome!” Sandwiches are also said to be very creative. Meat can be an add-on. Cash only.
2. Sugar Plum (vegan bakery)
2315 K Street
Sacramento CA 95816
(916) 706-3302
www.sugarplumvegan.com
This bakery had wonderful creative, sweets. A happy Yelp reviewer said, “”Their sweet potato panini is so good (I love my sweet/salty mixes).” Sole complaint: Not open enough hours.
And, the Number One vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Sacramento Is…
1. The Green Boheme (raw food)
1825 Del Paso Boulevard
Sacramento CA 95815
(916) 920-4278
www.thegreenboheme.com
This is a 100% raw food restaurant which advertises that it’s vegetarian and vegan. The reviews were outstanding. One Yelp review simply said, “Love it, love it, love it.”
Now, this is just the beginning! You too can prepare your top 5 or more vegetarian/vegan restaurants and share it with us here. I will look forward to your reviews, and happy eating!
