I am originally from Vancouver B.C. in Canada, and now reside in a small city in Northern Colorado. After getting my M.S. in Technical Communications from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1990, I have worked in Technical Writing and related areas ever since, working for companies of all sizes from startups to Fortune 500 companies. For the past several years I have been a contract-based technical writer in Utah and Colorado, and currently lead a team of nine writers located in the USA and India.

I started as a Student Member of STC at RPI, and have held a number of chapter-level positions, including Jobs Coördinator, Competition Organizer, and Chapter President, as well as judging entries at both the chapter and International levels. I have made multiple presentations to chapters and conferences over the years, and am an active member of the Lone Writers SIG as well as participating in other SIGs in the society.

In addition to my volunteer work with the STC, my current volunteer work includes assisting with communications for charity-based bicycle rides as a Ham radio operator (KG7DEA), membership in the International Order of Odd Fellows, and dog rescue. When I lived in Utah, my wife and I ran Utah Shiba and Akita Rescue, helping many dogs (of all breeds) get permanent homes. Currently my wife and I work with several rescue groups, and share our house with two rescued dogs.

Candidate Statement

After all these years as a technical writer, I find myself writing like Jack Webb’s character in the TV series ‘Dragnet’: “Just the facts, ma’am.” So… those who know me know that I am always trying to help other writers, whether by answering a question or finding them a new position. As part of the Nominating Committee, I would be able to expand my efforts to help our membership by working with the rest of the committee to find qualified members for the elective offices in the Society and encouraging them to consider running for those offices. We have a lot of very talented people in the STC, and a lot of people who want to contribute. The role of the Nominating Committee, as I see it, is to match up those people with the Society positions. I promise that if I am elected to the Committee I will do my best to do just that.
