Hyatt Regency O'Hare - Entrance

The entrance of Hyatt Regency O'Hare

Rosemont! At first glance, this locale may not have the allure of past Summit host cities such as Minneapolis, Atlanta, or Philadelphia; however, I believe that the location may actually be one reason you’ll want to attend the 2012 Summit. Here’s why: 1. Rosemont is easy to get to by plane, train, and automobile.
  • Fly into O’hare International Airport, and you’re just minutes from the Hyatt Regency O’Hare.
  • Fly into Chicago Midway Airport, and you’re 35 minutes away by taxi. Your flight, however, will probably cost less.
  • Take Amtrak to Chicago’s Union Station, and you’re 25 minutes away by taxi.
  • The Hyatt Regency O’Hare is located minutes from expressways such as I-90 and I-190.
2. Within a few blocks of the Hyatt, you’ll find plenty to do after-hours.
  • Restaurants to suit every taste and price range: Inside the Hyatt, you’ll find Red Bar ($$), which serves sushi. Within a few blocks, you’ll find places like Gibson’s, a leading Chicago steakhouse ($$$$); RAM, brewpub and sports bar ($$); and Abruzzi’s ($$), a full-service bar that serves Italian food and is a favorite with the locals.
  • Movie theater with 18 screens and optional VIP seating: Just a few blocks from the Hyatt, you can see first-run movies at Muvico. I always opt for the ground-floor seating, which I find plenty comfy. Upstairs, you’ll get the VIP experience, which includes access to a bar and grill and loveseat-style seating. Tip: I use the Flixster app to find out what’s playing and to buy tickets.
  • Rivers Casino: The newest casino in the Chicago area, Rivers opened in July 2011. A quick walk-through reminded me of the many casinos you’ll find on The Vegas Strip.
  • Concerts, sports, and live theater. You might be able to watch one of these at Allstate Arena, Rosemont Theater, or the Montrose Room. It’s too soon to tell what will be playing at these world-class venues.
3. Rosemont is small, clean, and less congested than a large city. With a population of 4,202, Rosemont is among the smallest of Chicago’s suburbs. Most of Rosemont’s revenue comes from conventions. Rosemont does everything to protect its livelihood. 4. Rosemont is close to Chicago. If you want to visit Chicago, you can easily do so. I’ll share information about some of Chicago’s hidden treasures in upcoming posts. Rosemont sounds great, and I look forward to visiting in May. At this rate it’ll be no time before Rosemont has an allure of its own. (Speaking of which, thanks for using “allure” in the same sentence with the perennially underrated Philadelphia, a city that I’ve always liked and that did a great job hosting the ’08 Summit.)

    1. STC Chicago

We’re looking forward to it too, Larry. And Philadelphia isn’t underrated in our book!

I’m already registered (early bird price, yesss!) and looking forward to seeing lovely little Rosemont.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you, Melissa! Is there anything you’re particularly interested in seeing or doing? If it’s something we haven’t already blogged about, we’ll add it to our list.

Well, one thing I’m really interested in – and nervous about – is that both the G8 and NATO summits in downtown Chicago will coincide with part of the STC Summit. I’m expecting somewhat unusual levels of security and protest both at the airports and in the downtown area. Do you have information on how that will affect getting around or other advice for attendees?

        1. STC Chicago

Hi Kai, Thanks for asking! While we don’t know what issues may arise, we know that the city of Chicago has been preparing for the upcoming events for some time now. STC’s Summit is not in downtown Chicago, and we don’t expect members to have difficulty getting around and enjoying their time while here. As the Summit approaches, we’ll post announcements and other helpful information about what to expect. For now, STC has provided guidance and travel tips for you at the official Summit website http://summit.stc.org/hotel-travel/transportation-options/. Finally, for more information about events associated with the G8 and NATO Summits, visit http://www.chicagog8nato.org/.
