STC President Visits Texas Tech University

Michael Hughes, STC president, visited Texas Tech University on 27 May to deliver a keynote talk to its fifth annual Online PhD Program seminar. This seminar is a two-week event that brings online students in Texas Tech’s PhD program in Technical Communication and Rhetoric together on campus.

The program includes two keynote speakers—one to discuss practitioner and applied theoretical issues in technical communication and rhetoric, the other to discuss scholarly and pedagogical issues. Hughes talked about the role of the PhD in industry. He compared and contrasted industry research with academic research  and reviewed typical research projects he has conducted as an industry practitioner.

Hughes is co-author with STC Fellow George Hayhoe of A Research Primer for Technical Communication, which features academic and practitioner research articles from Technical Communication, the journal of STC.
