Tales from the Anti-Hoarder
I love cleaning up messes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not chomping at the bit at the dinner table waiting for my 4-year-old to bump her hand against her cup just so I can wipe milk off the floor. I’m talking about the kind of messes that involve sorting things out, organizing, classifying. And what really gets my heart thumping is throwing things away. I’m the antithesis of a hoarder.
Apparently, people know this about me. My kids are kind enough to leave their toys on the floor because they know I have a passion for putting things away. One of my not-so-close friends made me the executor of her will because of my affinity for untangling other people’s business. Even in my work life, I have been the one to inherit messes—unfinished projects left behind by people who were laid off or who were redeployed to put out fires in another part of the company.
And so, as a result, I have learned a lot about what makes a good project go bad and how to give the project new life. It involves getting dirty in the beginning. And, my favorite part, throwing things away. Or, using an airline reference, jettisoning the load.
In my upcoming Live Web Seminar, From Freefall to Flight: An Enterprise Implementation Gets Strategic, we will go over the Top 10 Lessons Learned from years of turning around company-wide initiatives that are taking a nose dive. We will focus on a recent SharePoint implementation, but also reinforce with lessons learned from rolling out an improved data collection process, a revised proposal process, and a new resource allocation tool. The webinar applies not only to people who have inherited such an ailing project, but also to those who don’t want their project to end up that way.
Of course, there are many more than 10 lessons to learn, but our time together is short and I would like to leave a few minutes at the end for the attendees to shout out their ideas, as well. Together, we can clean up a whole lot of messes out there.
