STC Honors and Awards Application Season is Upon Us

Guest post by Cindy Currie, chair of the Recognition Committee.

It’s the most wonderful time of year! No, not the holidays … it’s time to nominate your fellow STCers for all sorts of honors and awards! There are many due dates over the next several months, so below is a look at all of it. Don’t miss this opportunity to honor your STC colleagues who demonstrate excellence in technical communication and service to the profession and the Society!

Society Honors

Associate Fellow and Fellow (Due 15 October 2012)

An STC Associate Fellow is a Senior Member who has been formally recognized by the Society for having attained distinction in the field of technical communication, while the rank of Fellow is the highest honor an STC member can receive and may only be awarded to Associate Fellows who have continued to excel in the field of technical communication. STC Fellows contribute to the profession and the Society at the highest level, as indicated by their publications, presentations, awards, mentoring, leadership, and community service.

Individual Awards

Distinguished Community Service Awards (DCSA, DSSA, DSAS) (Due 31 October 2012)

The Distinguished Community Service Awards recognize the hard work and commitment of STC’s community leaders. The three awards—the Distinguished Chapter Service Award, Distinguished SIG Service Award, and Distinguished Service Award for Students—recognize an individual’s exemplary effort, energy, and dedication to their community and it activities. The Distinguished Community Service Award is the highest level of recognition that a member can for service to their community.

Academic Awards

Sigma Tau Chi and Alpha Sigma Honor Societies (Due 26 October 2012)

STC sponsors two honorary societies for students. Sigma Tau Chi (STX) recognizes students in baccalaureate or graduate programs while Alpha Sigma (AS) recognizes those in two-year or certificate programs.

Jay R. Gould for Excellence in Teaching Technical Communication (Due 2 November 2012)

This award honors true academic mentorship; a record of successful students, defined as those who are involved in STC, and actively working in the profession; involvement in student activities outside of the classroom; innovation and creativity in teaching, and involvement in research that leads to changes in the way technical communication is taught.

Ken Rainey for Excellence in Research (Due 2 November 2012)

The Ken Rainey Award honors research that has made positive, significant contributions to technical communication practice and teaching. It rewards a lifetime of quality research in the field, a single high-quality empirical study, or a set of related high-quality studies.

Community Awards

Community Achievement Awards (Due 31 January 2013)

The Community Achievement Award recognizes a SIG, or professional or student chapter’s outstanding accomplishments in achieving the Society’s goals through a wide range of programs and activities.

Pacesetter (Due 25 March 2013)

STC’s Community Pacesetter Award recognizes innovative and successful community initiatives. Unlike STC’s other Community Achievement awards, which recognize communities for consistent strength in many varied activities, the Pacesetter Award recognizes the successful implementation of a single beneficial innovation that may be implemented by other STC communities.

STC’s Recognitions programs are best around. They are wonderful to receive and even more wonderful to give! So take time out of your busy schedule today to nominate a deserving STC colleague or two!
