Meet the Candidates: Alyssa Fox, Candidate for Secretary

Each of the candidates for the upcoming STC election were invited to submit a blog post to STC’s Notebook in support of their candidacy. Below is the post submitted by Alyssa Fox, candidate for Secretary. Click on her name to take you to her election page, or visit the main STC election page for information about all candidates.

I’m honored to be on the ballot again this year running for STC Secretary. Serving on the board these last two years has been a wonderful opportunity and experience, and I’d like to continue to help strengthen STC for the future.

Content strategy, design, and development is all over the place right now. Companies have realized this is a hugely important part of their business, and are working on ways to solve content issues that involve multiple departments and entire organizations. As technical communicators, we need to show our organizations how we can help them solve these business problems. STC can help with that. STC can trumpet the benefit of technical communicators to these organizations. STC can teach you about content. And STC can help you grow your career.

The new mission statement and focus areas for STC excite me. I’ve been inspired by the new trends in our field over the past few years like user experience, content strategy, and mobile user assistance. The Society’s recognition that technical communication is a discipline with core skills that can feed into or overlap with other disciplines opens so many doors for how we can educate and serve our members.

My time spent in STC has been invaluable, and I have learned so much from the resources provided by STC. The conferences, webinars, and local chapter meetings have helped me think, mature, and grow in my career. The people I have met have also nurtured me and mentored me in technical communication, career growth, and just life in general. Because I have gained so much from my STC membership, I’d like to contribute my leadership, business management, and communication skills to help the Society and its members. I enjoy sharing ideas with others and teaching others about the value of technical communication, and through this, I hope to strengthen our members and the Society.

I have served STC in several roles, both at chapter and Society level. In addition to my current role as STC Secretary, I have served on the Summit committee several times, including as Program Chair for the 2012 Summit. I have also served on the Intercom Advisory Panel and as a newsletter competition judge. At the chapter level, I have held several administrative council positions, including President. If you would like more information about me, please see my section of the STC election website at https://www.stc.org/election/item/alyssa-fox-3?category_id=68. Thank you for your interest in our work and in the Society, and I hope you’ll vote in the election for your future leaders.
