Letter from 2015 Nominating Committee Candidate, Ramesh Aiyyangar

The following post is by Ramesh Aiyyanger, candidate for the Nominating Committee in the 2015 STC elections.

Greetings STC members! I’m Ramesh Aiyyangar, and I’m a candidate for the STC Nominating Committee.

I am passionate about technical communications and STC. My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion and compassion. I have had very early interests in writing. Though I graduated in science, I always wanted to pursue a career in writing. I earned a post graduate degree in Journalism and Communications, studied computers, and also learnt the German language. I entered the world of journalism and wrote several human interest and social articles for leading publications. Before joining the software industry (and specifically the technical communications field), I had multi-disciplinary experience across various fields, including: journalism, corporate communications, public relations, training, and management. The common thread though was communications. For 20+ years, I learnt the art and science of technical communications while developing and managing information. Currently, I am employed as Business Head – Technical Communications at Persistent.

16+ years back, my association with STC began. STC is an amazing thing that happened to me, and I am lucky to be a part of STC. It has been a momentous and exciting journey for me. In the initial days at STC, I developed various professional skills. These skills enriched me and enabled me to evolve as a technical communicator. This led to the outcome of getting recognition and better employment opportunities. I achieved what I could with one hand as long as STC was holding the other. I owe a lot to STC. It is time to give back.

My sixteen years’ experience with STC has taught me the importance of building relationships. It is these relationships or friendships that have helped me evolve as a technical communication professional. Over the years, I have been able to build a strong network at the chapter and society level. Till now, I have served STC as a leader (Immediate Past President – 2014, Election Officer – 2014, President – 2013, and several other positions over the years), mentor, senior member, and most importantly as a volunteer willing to take up any responsibility.

I am contesting the Nominating Committee position so that I can serve the broader STC community and give back to STC – Serve The Community.

This position will help me identify our future leaders from among our very talented global membership. I believe I know what it takes to succeed in this profession and the qualities that our future STC leaders should possess to help lead us into our shared future. As a member of the Nominating Committee, I will do my best to develop an outstanding slate of candidates for society elections. With effective leadership at STC, it would mean greater recognition, improved education and networking opportunities for members, and advancement of the profession.

I’m proud of my STC membership, and privileged to be a part of this organization. STC has provided opportunities to me that has helped my professional growth. I am sure you as members of the Society for Technical Communication are also proud of your STC Membership, and your careers in technical communication. The Society must continually earn this pride, and provide value to its members, and promote the profession. That is why I’m running for Nominating Committee position to recruit potential leaders and strengthen STC with effective leadership for future.

I will be grateful for your vote. Thank you.
