Present as Part of a SIG Progression at the STC Summit

As you may know, the annual STC conference, Summit 2011, will be held 15-18 May 2011 in Sacramento, California. You can access the Call for Proposals here.

Each year, the SIGs put together progressions to provide condensed presentations to smaller groups. The progression time slot will be 60 minutes. During this time, there will be three 18-minute segments for each speaker to present his/her topic to a table with 10-12 attendees. Then the participants change tables to hear a different presentation. Each presentation is made two or three times, each time with a different group of roundtable participants.

For the 2011 conference, the SIGs are again preparing progressions related to their special interest group, and they need your help to fill the potential speaking slots.

SCHEDULE & DEADLINES

If you are interested in participating as a progression presenter, please reach out to the appropriate contact by 27 September 2010.

WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?

If you’re a seasoned presenter, you know the benefits of participating. However, if you’ve never presented at a conference, but maybe you’ve thought about it, the SIGs encourage you to do it. Here are a few reasons that you might consider participating:

  • It’s easier to justify attending the conference to your employer if you’re a presenter.
  • Participating in a progression requires less of a time commitment because you only need to develop about 10 minutes of material to present (and be ready to facilitate discussion).
  • Progressions offer a great opportunity to connect one-on-one with attendees on topics that you care about. (You will be presenting your information to 6-10 people at a time)
  • Being a conference presenter is a great way to contribute to our field, plus it looks good on your resume.

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

Send an email to the contact (see below) for the topic of interest and include the following information:

  1. Your proposed topic: title and brief description (50 words or less)
  2. Your name
  3. Your employer
  4. Your (snail) mail address
  5. Your phone number(s)
  6. Your email address
  7. Past presentations that you’ve given at other conferences, including the year, the topic, and the conference
  8. Optional: A short bio (100 words or less)

If you’d like to participate or if you have questions, email the appropriate SIG leader. If you’re not sure what topic you would present, that’s okay. Contact someone anyway. Perhaps they can help you develop a topic, or you can select one at a later time.
