As promised, here’s the first of a series of irregular posts on things some of the STC communities are doing that might be co-opted by other communities. Many chapters and SIGs have such great ideas, and often an idea one chapter or SIG has might be something the leadership thinks could be helpful to other STC communities. When that happens, email me about it and I’ll pass it along.
Dana Aubin, Blog/Newsletter Manager of the Rocky Mountain Chapter, writes that members are posting testimonials about why they’re renewing their memberships on the chapter’s blog. Read about a few of the examples already posted.
Dana explained the reasons behind their effort. “It is a marketing campaign, but it’s also an effort to remind people of the benefits of membership. We know that some people are struggling with the decision to renew because of the financial situation of the organization and the increased cost, and we want to share the aspects of STC membership that our members value and highlight the benefits of being a member of our chapter.”
As for if it’s working, Dana offered personal proof. “I struggled with the decision to renew and had decided to not renew this year. My thinking was that I could still network at the chapter meetings. However, reading the testimonials from other members of my chapter enforced the importance of supporting the entire organization, so that my chapter will continue to exist as part of the STC organization.”
So chapters and SIGs, feel free to borrow! Perhaps there’s a member out there that isn’t really sure about renewing and some words from a community member might be just enough to remind them what they’d be missing. It worked for the Rocky Mountain Chapter and for Dana; it could work for you too!
