Meet the Candidates: Kit Brown-Hoekstra, Candidate for Vice President

Each of the candidates for the upcoming STC election were invited to submit a blog post to STC’s Notebook in support of their candidacy. Below is the post submitted by Katherine (Kit) Brown-Hoekstra, candidate for Vice President. Click on her name to take you to her election page, or visit the main STC election page for information about all candidates.

My name is Kit Brown-Hoekstra, and I am honored to be a candidate for the STC VP position. You can find details of my experience on my STC election page.

Joining STC was one of the best decisions I made in my career:

  • Almost every client and job I’ve ever had arose as a direct result of my contacts in STC.
  • Through volunteering with STC, I learned project management, people management, and public speaking skills that I might not have gained otherwise.
  • I met many of my closest friends through STC, volunteering as a judge, and serving on chapter boards, Society committees, and myriad other activities.

STC serves an important role in promoting our profession, providing mentoring and networking opportunities, supporting emerging markets, and providing opportunities for professional development. A strong, global organization can elevate the profession and enhance opportunities for all of us, regardless of where we live and work.

In addition, keeping up with the trends and technology that affect our daily work is like trying to drink from a firehose. STC aggregates this knowledge and helps us keep up with the trends and find practical ways of using the information in our work.

I’m running for VP because I believe that you get what you give and I want to give back to the Society that has given me so much. I pledge to use my global perspective, business experience, and broad industry knowledge to lead STC forward.

Please review the information about all the candidates, and be sure to vote for the person you consider to be the best choice. In a typical year, less than 20% of the membership votes. Let’s change it to 100% this year. Voting is open 11-22 March 2013.
