STC Membership’s Tangible Benefits

I was laid off in July because of budget cutbacks. On the last day of work, I received a call from a recruiter asking if I could meet with a client who was convinced that I was the right candidate for the job. To my surprise, the interviewer was an STC member, had read my writing samples, and liked them. I was hired on the spot. Being an STC member was advantageous, but it wasn’t the only reason I was hired.

Sharing Community Files in Google Drive

In an earlier post, I suggested creating Google accounts for each of the executive roles in your community. One of the base concepts was creating an Admin Google account that would act as the fallback for all the subsequent chapter accounts. Another service that Admin account can have is to own the rights to the community’s Google Drive.

Introducing the 2016 Ken Rainey Award Winner

The Ken Rainey Award for Excellence in Research was established by STC in 2006 to celebrate and honor Professor Ken Rainey’s passion for research that results in improvements to technical communication, especially to practice. The goal of the award is to encourage quality and excellence in technical communication research by honoring those whose research studies have made an outstanding contribution to the field. The committee for this year’s award is Ann Blakeslee, Ph.D.; Michael Albers, Ph.D.; Saul Carliner, Ph.D., CTDP; Nancy W. Coppola, D.A.; and Laurie Kantner.

A Year of Growth: STC 2015 Year In Review

The Society for Technical Communication is pleased to publish its 2015 Year in Review, highlighting accomplishments, major initiatives, and updates to programming that advance the mission of the STC.

The report reviews accomplishments in the past year and the actions taken by the board, staff, and volunteers to strengthen the Society, both in terms of the value and satisfaction it provides members and its sustainability as a business. The report is intended to give members insight and information about the association they have so generously supported. Included in the report are details on ongoing programming (membership, education, conference, online presence, and publications), highlights on new programs (reopening of CPTC certification), new benefits, and a financial update.

Meet the Candidates – Lori Meyer

My name is Lori Meyer, and I am honored to be a candidate for the STC Nominating Committee in 2016. The role I am seeking will be filled this year by two elected candidates, who will work with the existing Nominating Committee members to seek, evaluate, and select the candidates for next year’s Society leadership positions…candidates who you in turn elect. Members of the Nominating Committee are not actual voting members of the STC Board, but their role is critical nonetheless — because they are responsible for offering a slate of qualified candidates who are committed to serving STC and all of its members.

Meet the Candidates – Liz Herman

My name is Liz Herman and I would welcome your vote for Director on the STC Board. My story, in short, is that I see technical communication in everything that I do and have done in my 20 years of professional experience. I am an advocate for this wonderful, dynamic field of work. From teaching technical communication courses to serving the STC organization to managing large operational projects in multiple industries, I will bring scholar, member, and practitioner perspectives to this important position.

Announcing the "Join Us" Member-Get-A-Member winners!

Thank you to everyone who participated and recruited new members as a part of our “Join Us” Member-Get-A-Member Campaign. The campaign was a big success!

STC Benefits: Affinity Program

One membership program that doesn’t receive a ton of visibility, but is a definite value for members, is STC’s Affinity Program. This program offers special rates or services to STC members at a discounted price. In some cases, but not all, STC receives a small royalty from these corporate partners each time a member purchases one of their products. This money supports STC programs and helps to keep membership dues from increasing.
