The Technical Communication Summit offers extraordinary opportunities for in-depth exploration of hot topics in technical communication. The certificate courses, held just prior to the Summit, continue to be extremely popular with attendees. Combined with the variety of learning experiences offered by the regular conference education sessions, the certificate programs give technical communicators the knowledge they need to stay on top of trends in a constantly evolving profession.
Workshops are another, shorter, preconference learning opportunity, with five courses to choose from.

Certificate Programs
Attendees who participate in the preconference certificate programs are exposed to the broad range of thinking and issues within a subject area. Participants who complete a program earn a certificate of attendance.
The certificate programs relate to scheduled Summit education sessions and are meant to be a further examination of aspects of the topic area. Session instructors will also recommend regular conference sessions to complement the certificate sessions (attendance at these sessions is not required for the certificate, but recommended for a more complete understanding of the topic).
This year, the certificate programs will be held Saturday, 4 May, and Sunday, 5 May, from 8:00 AM through 5:00 PM. Attendees can choose from the following certificate programs:
- The Basics of Technical Communication Business, presented by Saul Carliner
- Data Visualization: Seeing Through the Numbers, presented by Phylise Banner
- Strategic Information Architecture Bootcamp: Tools, Techniques, and Vision, presented by Alyson Riley and Andrea Ames
- Usability 101, presented by Carol Barnum
- Technical Editing Fundamentals, presented by Linda Oestreich and Michelle Corbin

For those desiring an additional, but shorter, preconference learning experience, STC will offer five half-day preconference workshops.
