Preconference certificate courses and workshops will again be offered at the 2014 STC Technical Communication Summit, with multiple two-day and 3.5-hour options available.
You can register for any of these events with the same registration link for the Summit. Please note that there are special “preconference certificate course plus Summit” packages available. If you’ve already registered for the Summit but would like to register for one of the preconference events, please contact Lloyd Tucker at lloyd.tucker@stc.org.
Certificate Courses
There will be four, two-day certificate courses offered on Saturday, 17 May, and Sunday, 18 May, with a certificate of attendance awarded at the end of each course.
Two of the courses are our traditional certificate courses (one subject and one presenter), while the other two certificate courses are bundled subjects with multiple presenters. The traditional two-day certificate courses offered are:
- Presentation Skills Master Class, presented by Leah Guren
- Writing Instructional Content, presented by Saul Carliner
Each “bundled” certificate course consists of four sessions, each a different topic within the main subject matter and taught by a different instructor. The sessions are 3.5 hours each and you will attend two per day. You must attend all four sessions in the bundle to receive a certificate of attendance. These certificate courses and their sessions are:
Content Design Certificate Course
- Structured Authoring and DITA, presented by Joe Welinske
- Content Strategy, Engineering, and Management: A Practical Introduction, presented by Joe Gollner
- Content Experience Modeling: Designing Customer Value and Consistency, presented by Andrea L. Ames (two workshops)
Responsive Design and Development Certificate Course
- Usability and User Experience—Maintaining Your Creative Edge, presented by Stuart Bender
- CSS Like a Pro, presented by Scott Deloach

Individual Preconference Workshops (no certificate given)
In addition to the packages described above, multiple 3.5-hour preconference workshops are offered on an à la carte basis; these workshops include the sessions that make up the two “bundled” certificate courses. If you don’t desire to take the entire certificate course, you can still attend one, two, or even three of the course’s sessions as separately purchased workshops.
All preconference workshops are priced individually and do not include Summit registration. Certificates will not be issued for individual workshops. Workshops scheduled are:
