STC Names "Most Improved Community" and "Community of the Year" Winners

STC unveiled the winners of two community awards at the 2014 Summit: The Most Improved Community and the Community of the Year. These awards were introduced at the 2011 Summit to complement the current community awards and provide an extra incentive for chapters and SIGs.

The Most Improved Community is given to the community that “stepped up their game” the most from one year to the next, based on their applications for the Community Achievement Award (CAA). This year the award goes to the New York Metro Chapter.

Tricia Spayer, chair of the CAA committee, said of their improvement, “In 2013, the New York Metro chapter had a solid CAA application that supported a well-run chapter. In the comments, the CAA Evaluation Committee suggested that the chapter pay attention to the items in the Distinction criteria and add them to their plan for the year, as these items provide additional value to the chapter members, students, and local community. New York Metro took this idea to heart, as evidenced in their application submitted for 2014. They added a large number of activities to their leadership plan and carried them out successfully. It is wonderful to see the growth and added value to their community this year!”

The Community of the Year Award is presented to the community that had the highest score of all of the outstanding Communities of Distinction. The fourth annual Community of the Year Award goes to the Orlando–Central Florida Chapter.

CAA committee member Mak Pandit, who evaluated the chapter, explained why they are deserving of the award. “The Orlando-Central Florida Chapter had a great number of items checked off in their application’s Distinction section,” he said. “Sharing knowledge is the core of STC and the chapter has demonstrated it well by working with a lot of other communities, including STC India and STC France. It also collaborated with Future Technical Communicators (FTC), and this relationship holds a lot of potential. Other community initiatives, like the chapter newsletter, automated job bank, and their work with students and mentees, show why they earned the Community of the Year Award.”

Congratulations to the leadership and members of both communities!
