It is my pleasure to send a warm thank you to the outgoing Intercom Editorial Advisory Panel (EAP) and introduce new panel members. The panel provides me with advice and feedback on editorial calendar themes, author suggestions, and more. Janel Bloch, Rhonda Bracey, Anne Gentle (Chair), Tom Johnson, and Whitney Potsus made up the first panel formed in 2008. The support from the panel has been extraordinary these past two years. Serving on the EAP for the 2010–2012 term are Alyssa Fox, Grant Hogarth, Char James-Tanny, Caroline Jarrett, Carolyn Kelley Klinger, and Ed Marshall.
Alyssa Fox is an information development manager at NetIQ Corporation and has been involved in technical communication for over 10 years, building cohesive, cross-functional teams that work together to deliver products relevant to users. A senior member of STC, she has served the Houston chapter and is an active participant in the Houston Agile Project Leadership Network. Alyssa has presented at several STC Summits, PMI Houston conferences, and STC Houston Chapter meetings, and has won awards in the local STC competition. She blogs at www.leadershipwithstyle.com, where she discusses topics related to management, leadership, and communication.
Grant Hogarth has been a technical writer for two decades, mostly for high-tech companies ranging in size from start-ups to members of the Fortune 500. He has been an STC member since 1989 and served in several chapter-level positions. A member of several STC SIGs, including the Lone Writers SIG, Grant has also been an ITPC judge and book reviewer for Technical Communication.
Char James-Tanny is president of JTF Associates, Inc., and has 30 years’ experience as a technical communicator. She speaks around the world on topics including help authoring concepts and tools, accessibility, social media, web standards, collaboration, and technology. Char has been a Microsoft MVP since 2002 and is a senior member of STC.
Caroline Jarrett is a user experience and usability consultant with a particular interest in designing forms that are easy to complete. These days, she divides her time between forms, content strategy, and different user research techniques. Caroline is coauthor of Forms that Work: Designing Web Forms (2008) and User Interface Design and Evaluation (2005). Caroline is an Associate Fellow of STC and wiki manager for the STC Technical Communication Body of Knowledge project.
Carolyn Kelley Klinger is an independent technical writing consultant working primarily for the National Cancer Institute, documenting software developed with the goal of curing cancer. She is the team lead for accessibility and Section 508 compliance and presents workshops on this topic to STC chapters and other groups. She is a two-time past president of the STC Washington, DC Chapter and past member of the STC Nominating Committee.
Ed Marshall is an independent technical writing consultant and sole proprietor of Marshall Documentation Consulting (www.marshalldocumentationservices.com), with more than 22 years’ experience. He specializes in application programming interfaces/software development kits, web services products, and other documentation. Ed has developed expertise in using tools to “let the computer do the work.” A popular speaker at professional development conferences, his previous appearances include events sponsored by STC, WritersUA, and DocTrain.
I hope you will all give the new EAP a warm welcome. Our first meeting is in August, so expect to see a 2011 editorial calendar posted soon. And please send me your articles and suggestions!
