International Summit Awards Best of Show Winner Announced

By the 2012 International Summit Awards Committee

Emily Serna accepts the Best of Show award at the Honors Banquet.

The International Summit Awards Best of Show winner, announced at the 2012 Summit, is “The Road to Financial Wellness—Financial Education Workbook” by PricewaterhouseCoopers. This entry was submitted by Emily Serna and included contributor Donna Goodwin, and came from the New York Metro Chapter.

The judges wrote of the entry, “A superb example of design and information architecture, everything about this piece is a call to action and a promise that by following simple steps, you can improve your financial health. This piece beautifully establishes an emotional connection between user and product. The tone, illustrations, and learning objectives clearly speak to everyone. The structure is friendly, logical, and easy to use. The writing is concise, and the pictures perfectly support the overall design. Masterful planning and research are evident in this workbook that guides its audience to accomplishment and gives a sense of hope for financial wellness for the future, regardless of the situation its reader is in today.”

STC’s International Summit Awards encourage and recognize excellence in our industry and are open to technical communication professionals. Entrants need not be a member of STC to participate. The awards competitions have two tiers—local or regional, and international—and are divided into four categories—Informational Materials, Instructional Materials, Promotional Materials, and User Support Materials.

Entries in the International Summit Awards are judged at a higher level and result in the selection of a Best of Show candidate in each category. To be a Best of Show candidate, the entry must receive a Distinguished Technical Communication award and be recommended to the Best of Show committee. A Best of Show entry must exhibit the ideals of its category: it is judged solely against established standards.

This year there were 86 entries total, with 72 percent receiving awards and one receiving the Best of Show award. Thank you to the 2011–2012 International Summit Awards committee members: Deanne Levander, Brian Lindgren, Dorothy Duffie, Barrie Byron, Kit Brown-Hoekstra, Paula Robertson, Mak Pandit, Peggy Frizzo, and Nathaniel Lim; local competition managers and judges; international competition judges; competitions entrants; and Board liaison Karen Baranich.

Congratulations to a wonderful Best of Show winner that has such personality and character!
