Honoring and Thanking STC Fellow Avon Murphy

Many STC members have worked with longtime member Avon Murphy, heard him speak, or read his words. He recently stepped down as the book review editor for Technical Communication, having reached his goal: finalizing the Avon J. Murphy Endowed Graduate Fellowship in English at his alma mater, Washington State University. What many may not know is that Murphy turned over his annual stipend from STC for his work directly to WSU to help complete his endowment.

At this year's Summit in Sacramento, CA, his Technical Communication colleagues thanked him for years of service in the best way they knew how. According to WSU's College of Liberal Arts newsletter, Nexus, Murphy thought to himself, “Okay, here comes a Kindle for sure,” when it became apparent he was receiving a gift from his colleagues. Instead, he was provided with a donation of more than $1,800 to his endowment.

  1. Avon Murphy did a grand job for the STC the past 17 years as its Book Review Editor for the Technical Communication journal. I appreciate having been a reviewer under his wing and now am being advised by him for assuming his role as Book Review Editor.

Congratulations, Avon. An accomplishment for sure!
