Looking for a TechComm Class Project? Look No Further!

STC is holding a free webinar to showcase ways to use a class project to help populate our burgeoning Technical Communication Body of Knowledge (BOK). The webinar, Making it Real for Your Students: Building the TC Body of Knowledge, takes place on Thursday, 1 December, from 11:00 AM-Noon EST (GMT-5).

Developing a technical communication BOK has been an ongoing and important effort by STC volunteers. Having a body of knowledge helps define the technical communication profession. The challenge for technical communication is that our profession is dispersed and interdisciplinary, with a large number of topics that need to be covered.

Stephen Bernhardt of the University of Delaware and Thomas Barker of Texas Tech University have both used populating the TC BOK for class projects, assigning students to create and organize content in specific subject areas of the BOK. Stephen and Thomas will lead this webinar (along with the BOK manager, Connie Kiernan) to demonstrate what they did, and discuss how others might be able to do the same with their classes and contribute to this extremely important endeavor.

Creating content for the BOK as a student team requires collaboration, audience analysis, content strategy, rhetorical skill—most of the skills and concepts TC students need to prepare for the workplace. And while they learn these skills and concepts, the students will be benefiting the profession into which they’ll soon enter.

This webinar is completely free, but we request you register in advance. Please join us to find out how you can use the TC BOK as a class project.
