Meet the Staff: Sophie Coy

We continue today with the new feature, Meet the Staff. There are a few new staff members, so we thought it would be a good idea to introduce or reintroduce the entire staff to STC members. This will also give those going to the Summit a way to get to know the people you’ll be seeing all over the place running things, so feel free to come up and say hi. We’ll post one every week or so for the next few months. You’re welcome to pose questions for the staffer as well, and we’ll try our best to answer.

What's your name and title?
Sophie Coy, Assistant Manager of Community Relations

What is your area of expertise?
Community relations, office administration, and customer service.

Titles are one thing—what do you actually *do* at STC?
Various and sundry tasks. I correspond with and assist our community leaders, monitoring the health and needs of our communities, assisting the finance department, answering the phones and assisting in member requests, regardless of the department, plan staff events, and manage the daily needs of the office staff. In sum, I meet the daily needs of our community leaders, members, staff, and even Board.

What have you done in previous jobs that prepared you for this job?
Good question. I have worked in a variety of fields, but most recently in the legal profession. My work in legal services prepared me for the customer and member interaction and taught me the importance of timely responses and dependability.

Care to tell us a bit about your family/pets/etc?
Everything in my family tends to come in twos. There are two children in my immediate family, my sister and I; I have two toddler nephews; and I have two pets—a orange tabby cat named Opie (after Ron Howard’s character from The Andy Griffith Show) and Trooper (a one-year-old Shetland Sheepdog).

What do you do when you're not hard at work for STC?
I have a part-time job as a research assistant for Helen Alvaré at George Mason University School of Law. When I’m not working at either of my jobs, I am spending time with my family or friends, watching baseball, or experimenting in interior design, acrylic painting, pastels, and photography. Oh, and I love to dance!

Can you tell us about an odd talent or skill you're particularly proud of?
I used to write poetry. For special occasions, I would write a poem for each member of my family. I guess that’s not very odd, but oh well.

Any final thoughts or comments?
That’s all, folks!

  1. Thanks, Rachel! Judy, I come from a family of die-hard Yankee fans! But we also like and follow the Orioles, a little closer to home, and our local minor league team, the Potomac Nationals.
