Introducing the API Track at the 2015 Summit

A January 2015 Harvard Business Review article, “The Strategic Value of APIs,” illustrates how companies have discovered significant growth opportunities by offering APIs. Previously the purview of the technology industry, APIs are now offered by companies in industries as diverse as fashion, real estate, and retail. Many of us wouldn’t think a Walgreens API exists. Even in technology companies, APIs are being used as a bridge between industries. When we think of IBM’s Watson, we likely don’t think about it as a partner in oncology care.

Interview with Nancy Duarte – Opening Keynote Speaker at the 2015 Summit

Past STC President Nicky Bleiel sat down to have a chat with Nancy Duarte, Opening Keynote Speaker for the 2015 Summit. Some highlights from their conversation include:

It’s our job to transform our organizations so we are ready for the future … and there’s really no way to transform without persuading.
You can send out communications all day, but if you don’t empathetically understand who you are talking to, and from their vantage point “walk in their shoes” and understand what they need from you to be successful … then, you’re not resonating.
We’ve just changed so much, how we process and consume information. We’re consuming it in smaller bites.

Discovering Columbus

When STC announced the location of the 2015 Technical Communication Summit, there were mixed reactions. Columbus, Ohio. “What? Where?” people asked. I get it. I only discovered Columbus, Ohio when I traveled to the city for a job interview with Battelle last year. I was hired for the job and, although I am located in Battelle’s Arlington, Virginia office, I have spent a good amount of time traveling to Battelle’s Columbus-based headquarters over the past year. I can tell you that I have been pleasantly surprised by Columbus. I asked some Battelle colleagues working there to share what they find interesting and unique about Columbus.

A Note from STC’s Summit Best of Show Winner

The Biological and Environmental Research Information System (BERIS) team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is highly honored to have been named STC’s 2013-14 International Summit Awards Best of Show. Yet, we also acknowledge the nearly 25 years of valuable experience and guidance we have received from entering STC technical communication competitions at the chapter and international (if our entries were deemed worthy) levels. Participating in chapter competitions in East Tennessee, Washington DC–Baltimore, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Florida has provided us with a broad range of opinions and competitors in publications, art, and online formats. We very much appreciate the judges’ critiques and comments, and all of them have contributed to our receiving this ultimate award and recognition from our peers
